Save Soil
Save Soil is a global environmental movement launched in 2022 by the Indian yoga master
and activist Sadhguru (Jaggi Vasudev). Its main goal is to raise global awareness about
severe soil degradation (soil erosion) and to encourage governments worldwide to take strong political action to protect and restore agricultural land.
Here are the key points of the initiative:
-
The problem: According to organisations like the UN, over half of the world's agricultural soils are already degraded. The causes include intensive farming, the use of pesticides, deforestation, and climate change. Experts are warning of a global food security crisis if the humus content in the soil continues to shrink.
-
The core demand: The movement calls on governments to create legal frameworks ensuring that agricultural soils have a minimum organic content of 3 to 6%. This is the only way to keep the soil alive, help it store water, and ensure it can produce food in the long term.
-
The approach: Save Soil focuses on education and cooperation. It mobilises governments, international organisations (such as the UNCCD and UNEP), and the general public to work together to promote humus build-up and more regenerative farming.
Could you see yourself consciously looking out for soil-friendly or regeneratively produced food in your everyday life or when you're out shopping?
